Abstract.
During welding, temperature distribution of welding area was monitored with K-type thermocouples on the surface of advancing and retreating sides.
The material located at the advancing side is mainly influenced by the friction from shoulder and pin, while at the retreating side, the dominating effects are extrusion and backfill from the advancing side and the shoulder.
It is interesting to note the general trend of higher hardness for the measurements at RS (retreating side) comparing to one at AS (advancing side), which is distinguished at Fig. 4(a).
