Abstract: Nowadays, the demands of large scale surface devices are becoming popular in engineering fields.
Today, the demands of large scale devices is now becoming popular in the engineering fields, such as engineering ceramics, advanced optics [3].
But the final form accuracy is still failed to meet the engineering’s high requirements, the condition also deteriorates with the increasing size of the workpiece.

Keywords: T-GMAW, heat input, distortion, SAW, shipbuilding.
The current SAW process utilises a ceramic backing channel on the underside of the weld to form the underside bead shape.
As the size of the channel was deemed too large for the T-GMAW process, it was decided to half fill the ceramic groove with flux to simulate a smaller sized backing channel.
