So first, we will introduce what is the circular birefringence of material. 1.2 The concept and the mathematical expression of circular anisotropy In nature, there are many materials with asymmetric structure have anisotropic dielectric permittivity, which causes the optical anisotropy.
Some materials have a special optical properties, their absorption coefficient or refractive index are not the same for left and right circularly polarized lights, which is called as optical circular anisotropic media, also including the circular dichroism and circular birefringence.
For isotropic materials, al=ar and nl=nr.
