It is one of the rare oxide-semiconductor materials which can realize quantum size effect.Nano ZnO under UV irradiation can produce the photogenerated electron-hole pairs.
So far, there are two methods to increase specific surface area of nanostructured materials: one is by reducing the product sizes; second is by synthesising product with multiple pores.
