Sintering the bioactive glass foam at 800°C was the optimum treatment for the
production of a macroporous scaffold for tissue engineering.
Results For tissue engineering applications, the modal interconnected pore diameter (Dmode) must be greater than 100µm, to allow tissue ingrowth and eventually vascularisation.
Therefore heating the scaffold above 800°C reduced Dmode below the 100µm required for tissue engineering applications.
To obtain a bioactive glass scaffold of optimum strength and with a pore structure suitable for tissue engineering, the foams should be sintered at 800°C.
