With the development of cutting theories and materials of cutting tool, high speed cutting is considered as a fast developing and comprehensive engineering technology with great potential and was applied widely in many industrial field such as aeronautics and astronautics, automobile, mould, etc.
Thus when cutting tool advances into workpiece with a very high speed, the temperature in workpiece surface would be very high in a short time, and the machined surface suffers a heat change.

., Japan Organization The JSPS 124th Committee on Advanced Ceramics Sponsor and Supporting Organizations The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) The Ceramics Society of Japan (CSJ) Engineering Ceramics Division PREFACE The cutting edge of engineering ceramic research is evolving rapidly, leading into new fields far beyond the conventional image of ceramics.
Our cornerstone symposium will focus on the mechanical behavior and structural design of advanced monolithic and composite ceramics.
The 4th International Symposium on Advanced Ceramics (ISAC-4) aimed to discuss and review the recent achievement of advanced engineering ceramics and composites, and was held in Osaka November 14 to 18, 2010 following the success of "The International Symposium on Novel Synthesis and Processing of Ceramics" in October 1997 in Kurume, Japan, and "The 2nd International Symposium on Advanced Ceramics (ISAC-2) -The Leading Materials in 21st Century-" in November 2002 in Shanghai, China, and "The 3rd International Symposium on Advanced Ceramics (ISAC-3) -Innovation of Ceramic Science and Engineering-" in December 2006 in Singapore.
Financial support was generously provided by the Ceramics Society of Japan (CSJ) Engineering Ceramics Division and by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) for publishing the present proceedings.
We hope that this international symposium will continue to provide an open forum for the discussion and review of achievement in all aspects of research and development in the fields of advanced ceramics.
