Al-Si matrix MMCs which are reinforced by alumina short fibers have been widely applied to piston materials [3-5].
Material and methods The short fiber reinforced MMCs used in this study were Al-Si piston alloy (Table 1) reinforced with three volume fractions of 10, 17 and 25 vol.% alumina short fibers.
This meant there was an optimal volume fraction of alumina short fibers for the Al-Si MMCs piston material.
