Alkaline pre-treatment of lignocellulosic materials could remove extractives, partially lignin and hemicellulose to purify raw materials and alter lignin structure, thus improving accessibility of the remaining cellulose for chemical reagent, i.e. reactivity of raw materials[1].
Zeta potentials of samples change from -20.5 to 37.3 mv, increasing the existence of positive-charge functional groups on the CS-AE structure.
It is clear that surface of CS-AE is smoother than that of CS in Fig. 3, and some of pores appear in cellulose structure of CS-AE, indicating that the order of cellulose was improved owing to removing of the hemicellulose, lignin, ash and extractives during the modification.
It indicated that a large number of amino groups have been introduced into CS-AE structure after chemical conversion, which is also can be confirmed by the increase of nitrogen content (N%).

Introduction Reliable operation of any technology depends largely on the performance of elastomeric products that form an integral part of the various structures.
