From X-ray diffraction studies, the presence of the following crystalline phases in the binder raw material (mining tailings) could be identified: Quartz (SiO2), Pyrite (FeS2), Calcite (CaCO3), Muscovite (K0.77Al1.93(Al0.5Si3.5)O10(OH)2) and Clinochlore ((Mg,Fe)6(Si,Al)4O10(OH)8).

Results presented
here, are similar to those obtained by Kulpa el al. [4], which identified a psychrotolerant strain of At. ferrooxidans in enriched culture of a mine drainage-impacted soils and sediments from Siberia
and Sweden.

For example, the turbidity of raw water in the Shimen Reservoir Dam area in Northern Taiwan climbed to 120,000 NTU and 46,000 NTU during the landfall of typhoons in 2006 [4]; further, Typhoon Kalmaegi and Morak also made their landfalls in southern Taiwan on July 17, 2008 and in August 2009 respectively, and the rain concentrated its falling in the catchment area upstream from the dam, exhibiting 800mm and 2,000mm of super rainfall, which created 59,000 NTU and 70,000 NTU of turbidity at the intake area (EL. 170m) at the uppermost layer of the Nanhua Reservoir Dam.
