Biomimetic Design and Manufacturing of Anti-Erosion Functional Surfaces Inspired from Desert Scorpion Zhiwu Han1, a, Mingkang Yang1, b, Wei Yin2, c, Junqiu Zhang1, d * 1Key Laboratory of Bionics Engineering of Ministry of Education, Jilin University, Changchun 130022, China 2State Key Laboratory of Tribology, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China aemail: zwhan@jlu.edu.cn, bemail: yangmk14@mails.jlu.edu.cn, cemail: yinwei@mail.tsinghua.edu.cn, demail: junqiuzhang@jlu.edu.cn Keywords: desert scorpion, anti–erosion, biomimetic surfaces design and manufacturing, simulation, bionic centrifugal fan blades Abstract: Sand erosion is a phenomenon that solid particles impinging to a wall cause serious mechanical damages to its surface.
It has been recognized as a serious problem in various engineering applications, including helicopter rotor blades, impeller blades, aircraft engine blades, missile components, etc.
Hence, researchers in material erosion, including composites[4-6], surface hardening[7,8], material modification[9,10] and other fields[11] are trying their best to solve the concerning issue from the viewpoint of saving materials, reducing energy consumption and prolonging the material life.
Although these methods improved the wear resistance of materials to some extent, unnegligiblely, it always results in cost increasing.
Finally, we installed the sample blades in the centrifugal fan and explored their performance. 2 Materials and Methods 2.1 Animals and morphological observation Adult specimens of the desert scorpion A. australis and the Asia rainforest scorpion H. spinifer, were purchased from pet suppliers.

It can be noted that the predicted value is larger than back-analyzed one with a relative error permissible in engineering, which can meet the engineering requirement.
Hence, the formula given in the paper can be used in engineering design to predict soil nail axial force.
