Experimental Starting materials were TiO2 and Al powders both with commercial purity which were precisely weighed according to the following reaction and then mixed together and milled by a Fritch P5 type planetary ball mill with a constant ball to powder ratio of 20:1 and running speed of 300rpm, under pure argon atmosphere for 8 hours. 3TiO2 +7Al→3TiAl+2Al2O3 (1) 10% excess Al powder was used to ensure the existence of sufficient Al for the reaction and 5wt% of AlCl3 was added to the powder mixture to facilitate the milling process.
