Piezoelectric (PZT) stack was first proposed in 1962 by Ramsay and Mugridge right after the appearance of the piezoceramic materials [2].
Both PZT stack and single crystal PZT have drawn increasing research interests due to the unique advantages of piezo materials such as fast response, low inertia, smooth motion without wear and high resolution.
The volume of the active piezo materials for the single crystal PZT motor is 144 mm3 while it is 228.6 mm3 for the stack motor.
Taking the volume of the active materials into account, the performance of the stack motor is still better.
