Through literature materials review we can get to know [4] the main effect of Cl− ion penetrating into concrete on reinforcement corrosion:
1) Destroy passivation membrane: Microscopic testing experiment shows that partial acidification of Cl− ion can reduce PH of reinforcement surface to the extent of lower than 4, and then destroy passivation membrane.

To serve the purpose of protecting the risers from vessel impact, tubular members made from mild steel became the primary choice of material for its ability to deform well upon collision and dissipate the kinetic energy of the colliding vessel.
The material properties of typical mild steel [11] used in this analysis is presented in Table 4.
