Experimental and FEA Studies of a New Type SMA Viscous Damper

Article Preview

Abstract:

In this paper, a new type shape memory alloy (SMA)-viscous damper is studied by experiment and FEM analysis. As the main mechanical parameters of the damper were obtained by experiment, the damping effect of this composite damper for an eight-story steel frame structure model was discussed by using ANSYS. Both the damped and undamped structures had been analyzed and the vibration responses of this steel framework were compared. The results show that the damper has both the energy dissipating and reset features with the hysteretic loop under cyclic loading-unloading, and the new composite damper has significant damping effect for steel frame structure.
