Protection Strategy for Two-Stage Cascaded Passive Optical Networks with Various Topologies

Abstract:

PON technology is widely accepted as primary solution in the broadband access networks. Protection is an important issue in PON system while only protection of tree topologies has been studied and other topologies are ignored. This paper presents a comprehensive study on the protection schemes of two-stage cascaded PON with different topologies including tree-tree, tree-bus, ring-tree and ring-bus topologies. The reliability and protection issues were studied using reliability theory and numerical simulations. Results show that ring-bus topology has the best performance.
