A New View of Mode Mixing Phenomenon

Article Preview

Abstract:

The EMD method is to separate a composite signal into simple oscillatory mode functions called intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) which are generated by a sifting process. IMFs can lose their physical meaning when mode mixing phenomenon occurs. For mode mixing, do not have an exact definition by now, the purpose of this paper is to analysis the mode mixing phenomenon in the EMD method and to advance a new view of mode mixing. By the model and the simulations, we point out that cutoff frequency and the extrema rate of signal is the fundamental reason of mode mixing.
