Snow Melting from Solar Radiation to Mitigate the Road Freezing

Article Preview

Abstract:

Road safety from various environmental disasters has gained much attention during construction project. Global warming has changed the weather patterns, such as regional torrential rains, heavy snow, and severe cold, and these irregular weather changes have brought huge amount of physical and human damages. In winter season, road freezing caused by snow or icing condition has increased the traffic accidents: traffic mortality is larger in winter than other seasons. In this paper, snow melting mechanism on road pavement by solar radiation and the effect of shadow and temperature is analyzed. Also, numerical analysis on snow melting is performed to provide the guideline of road design considering the solar radiation in an effort of mitigating the road freezing and reducing the traffic accidents in winter.
