Power Conversion Performance and the Suitability of Z-Source Inverter of PMSG Based WECS at Variable Wind Speed Conditions

Article Preview

Abstract:

This paper presents a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) based wind energy conversion system with Z-source inverter. The output voltage of a Z-source inverter remains constant so long as the wind speed remains constant. Unfortunately, wind speed keeps changing and hence the output voltage at the inverter outlet. This poses a problem in getting the inverter connected to the grid. Recognizing the fact that the output voltage level at the inverter depends on the shoot through period, the authors propose a varying shoot through period depending on the wind velocity which enables the voltage level remain constant at the inverter output. A neural network is trained and made use of to predict the required shoot through period depending on the current wind velocity.
