Microstructural Transformation during Dissimilar Friction Stir Welding (FSW) of Aluminum-Cooper Alloys

Article Preview

Abstract:

This paper presents some results obtained in Friction Stir Welding (FSW) of aluminum and cooper alloys, as a result of joint researches carried out in University Politehnica Timisoara and National R&D Institute for Welding and Material Testing – ISIM Timisoara. Microstructural investigations revealed a nugget zone well defined, in which the two materials are well mixed and adjacent zones (thermos-mechanically affected zones) in which thin vanes from one material is mixed into the other material. SEM and EDX analysis revealed the blending of the two materials which provides good continuity of the welded joint. The tool and welding technology developed during the researches provides a good quality FSW welded joint. which will give the possibility to engineer components with high electric current conductivity and in the same time low weight, needed by the automotive industry in developing the new generation of electric vehicles.
