Preface Engineering problem solving is essentially that of design and optimization, which is critical to the success of product development and implementation.
As such, the editors of the current issue of the book series and its corresponding conference organizers decided to continually focus their efforts on providing a forum for the international researchers and engineers, from mechanical and manufacturing engineering area, to exchange ideas and showcase their latest research findings.
Being the third one in a series, the book Advances in Engineering Design and Optimization III, and the conference Third International Conference on Engineering Design and Optimization, Shaoxing, PRC (ICEDO 2012), have not only attracted many attentions from academics and engineering sectors worldwide, but also won many supports from various levels of government and managerial organizations.
Similar to the last two issues of the series, Advances in Engineering Design and Optimization (in 2010) and Advances in Engineering Design and Optimization II (in 2011), the current book is also a compilation of selected and peer-reviewed papers from its corresponding conference, i.e.
Together, they present a state-of-art research results in the aforementioned areas of engineering design and optimization.

Although PECS has been used to produce some iron-base soft magnets [4-5], cast iron P/M materials [6-7] and ZrO2 / stainless steel functionally graded materials [8], there are few reports on applications of this technique to engineering steels.
However, when the powders were sintered at a pulse peak of 3000 A, the density 50µm 50µm 50µm 50µm Advances in Materials Manufacturing Science and Technology 228 grew quickly to a maximum of 7.48 g/cm3 at 4 min, and then approximately leveled off up to 6 min.
However, a too high pulse peak caused an Materials Science Forum Vols. *** 229 unexpected fast sintering rate in the initial stage and brought in entrapped gases, so that a further densification in the final sintering stage was hindered.
