A well-designed layout can promote utilization of manpower, facilitate the production process and decrease material handling cost, lead time and throughput time, while an inefficient layout design leads to inefficiency of manufacturing system by increasing the material handling cost and accumulated work in process.
Sangwan and Kodali, proposed a model that in addition to minimization of the material handling cost, maximized the closeness rates [2, 3].
