Reinforced concrete beams are widely employed in civil engineering structures.
The inverse problem is solved in a general way using engineer numerical tools: Python scripts and the free finite element software Code_Aster.
Introduction Reinforced concrete beams are widely employed in civil engineering structures.
In usual civil engineering calculations, one-dimensional models [2, 3] are widely used to simulate non-linear behaviors of reinforced concrete structures at a low computation cost.

Composite materials are increasingly used in civil field for structural strengthening.
For these reasons, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is becoming more and more important in many applications of civil engineering industry.
Particularly, optical fibers seem to be very suited to the use of the SHM for civil structures, thanks to their intrinsic properties.
Conclusions In this work, an experimental study was performed on a smart device (called Smart Patch - SP) for civil applications, made of an FRP plate with an optical fiber sensor embedded inside during the manufacturing process.
