Thus, the necessity to evaluate the real strength capacity of these structures with modern analysis techniques has become essential, leading to the determination of their safety level in case of an earthquake.
According to the Italian technical codes, the sum of the structural and non-structural masses is considered in the performed analysis (NTC, 2008, § 3.2.4 [10]) and the mass of the traffic loads is disregarded.
For these structures the number of modes that have to be considered to reach a cumulative mass greater than 85% (the usual recommended by international guidelines) is a large number and many of these modes have participation factor very low.

In order to diminish the influence of underground tunneling on ground subsidence and usual traffic flow, shield tunneling method is generally used to drive running tunnels in subway lines in Chinese cities in comparison with drill and blast method [3].
