Quantum mechanical calculations have been performed to study the equilibrium among the key intermediates (iminium ion, oxazolidione, and enamine) in the proline-catalyzed reactions under base-free and base-present conditions.
The general mechanism of the proline-mediated reactions of aldehydes or ketones has been envisaged to involve three key intermediates as iminium ions/enamines/oxazolidinones and the enamine intermediates were proposed to hold the key to the mechanism.
As reported by Gschwind et al. in their experiments, there exists the tautomeric equilibrium among the three key intermediates of enamine, iminium ions, and oxazolidiones.
Summary DFT study have been performed to explore the equilibrium among the key intermediates (iminium ion, oxazolidione, and enamine) in the proline-catalyzed reactions.
