The synthesized Ca2.6Bi0.4Co4O9 ceramic materials have potential application for high-temperature thermoelectric energy conversion.
Developments of thermoelectric materials which convert heat into electrical energy are expected for the efficient use of energy.
The thermoelectric materials should be chemically and thermally stable to utilize waste heats, since they are supposed to work under conditions of high temperature and corrosive atmospheres [1-3].

Compared to other smart materials and structures, the DESCE is second to only piezoelectric ceramics in this respect.
Basic materials properties as well as performance under space environment - vacuum, temperature, and radiation stability - will be discussed.
Their performance in terms of actuation strain vastly supersedes other EAP technologies and smart materials in general.
Hence metals are attractive as electrode materials for actuators.
