Natural biopolymers have advantages over synthetic biodegradable polymers in that they are renewable and pollution-free raw materials.

Although paper is an ideal natural material for packaging materials due to its biodegradability, recyclability, and printability, its uses in the air-tight and water-resistant packaging applications are limited.
