For engineering change, the opportunities offered by the use of new materials are important, and a possibility of integrating mechatronic components and systems into the existing products arises.
Smart items (electronics, software, materials) integrated into the existing product offer new features and capabilities to the user.
A very important point to engineering change is to apply a new design of materials and mechatronic systems to forming the base for increasing the effectiveness of this phenomena.

The Center in Processing, Research and Application of Advanced Materials of SPI is intended to
better integrate the materials science and technology sector in Lithuania into the European research
area by putting the capabilities of SPI to a greater service of the economical and social needs of the
country.
Key properties of THz radiation: penetrates clothing, leather, paper, plastics, packing materials; suitable for materials identification using characteristic Terahertz spectra; 3-D imaging capability; non-ionizing - no damage to body or cells; short wavelength - high resolution.

Thus, R&D activities are defined as follows: Research is the original planned investigation that seeks to discover new knowledge and a superior understanding in the scientific and technological field, and development in the application of the results of the investigation or of any other type of scientific knowledge in the manufacture of new materials or products or in the design of new processes or production systems, as well as for the substantial technological improvement of pre-existing materials, products, processes or systems.
As can be seen in Table 1, very diverse journals have been selected by the students, although two of them stand out, Procedia Engineering and Journal of Materials Processing Technology, both with 14 papers selected.
