Preface This issue collected some engineering, tribology and materials research papers from the International Conference on Engineering Tribology and Applied Technology 2018 (ICETAT 2018).
At the same time, the conference represented a unique opportunity for the tribology and engineering community to present their new research results, exchange ideas and become familiar with new trends and directions in the fields of Basic Friction and Wear, Biotribology, Contact Mechanics, Green Tribology and Sustainability, Lubricants and Lubrication, Material Analysis and Examination, Manufacturing Technology, Micro and Nano Tribology, Surface Engineering and Coating, Tribology in Machine Elements, etc.
The papers presented in Journal of Key Engineering Materials were the selected manuscripts associated engineering tribology and materials research areas from ICETAT2018.

According to Rabinowicz theory [3], because of the materials with small elastic modulus E can store elastic deformation energy, and the materials with high hardness H and small elastic strain limit usually display excellent friction properties in wear.
In order to improve the interface strength between DLC film and substrates, it has been considered to use intermediate materials.
The results obtained are as follows: 1) When DLC film is directly deposited on surface of metal materials at room temperature, cracking is formed and local shedding is also generated on surface of film.
