Influence of Microstructure on Physico-Mechanical Properties and Corrosion Resistance of Refractory Forsterite-Spinel Ceramics NGUYEN Martin1,a* and SOKOLÁŘ Radomír1,b 1Brno University of Technology, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Institute of Technology of Building Materials and Components, Veveří 331/95, 602 00 Brno, Czech Republic anguyen.m@fce.vutbr.cz, bsokolar.r@fce.vutbr.cz Keywords: Forsterite; spinel; synthesis; microstructure; corrosion resistance.
Owing to its very high melting point of 1890°C and its low reactivity with iron at high temperatures, forsterite has been largely used as a refractory lining of metallurgical furnaces and regenerators in the iron, steel and non-ferrous metals industries. [1–3] Due to the high coefficient of thermal expansion of forsterite, which closely correlates with the coefficient of metals, forsterite ceramics are also applied for ceramic-metal joints in electrotechnical engineering [4, 5].

Introduction Detecting damage in a structure by monitoring has been an important task throughout the literature devoted to aerospace, mechanical and civil engineering.
A physical parameter as the plate thickness or the material properties of an specific element can be chosen as updating variable, therefore, the engineer can analyze easily the credibility of the results.
