SMAs have found many interesting applications in various fields of civil and mechanical engineering.
Conclusions It has been successfully demonstrated in this paper that multi-functional material components made out of shape memory alloys or piezoelectric materials bonded to, or integrated within, hosting composite structural elements can be used in engineering practice for control of various mechanical (static and dynamic) characteristic of the elements, or as sensors or actuators enabling one to control their health state.
