The technique involves the application of an inverse-magnetostrictive effect in ferromagnetic materials, such as tempered 11/4Cr-1/2Mo steels below the ductile-brittle transition temperature.
The technique is applicable to all ferromagnetic materials, such as steels, iron alloys, Co alloys, Ni alloy, ferrite magnet, Fe-Nd-B magnets, Sm-Co magnets and super-magnetostrictive materials, as far as they showed a large magnetostriction effect. 2.
This result indicates the hysteretic characteristics of B-H curve in ferromagnetic materials, and suggests that the strain during fracture propagation is more than the amount of magnetostriction coefficient driven by the oversaturated magnetic flux density.
