Preface Since the previous symposiums held in Hong Kong (1992, 2000), Beijing (1994), Hiroshima (1996), Seoul (1998), Sydney (2002) were so successful and fruitful, AEPA has now become a major biannual event in the field of engineering plasticity.
The Seventh Asia-Pacific Symposium on Engineering Plasticity and Its applications (AEPA2004) held on the 22nd to 26th September 2004 at Shanghai Jiaotong University, PR.China, provides a free forum for exchanging the new ideas, communicating the research information and presenting the latest advances to the researchers and the engineers in this field.
This proceedings contains 192 papers selected from more than 300 submissions, covering a wide range of topics including damage and failure, constitutive modeling, rate-dependent and time-dependent behaviors, micromechanics, fatigue evaluation, numerical simulation technique, advanced materials, forming and machining, superplasticity, and structural stability.

Preface The international conference Advanced Materials and Structures - AMS 2011 is the fourth edition; first one in 1998, of a scientific event organized by the Department of Materials and Manufacturing Engineering from the POLITEHNICA University of Timisoara, with the support of the POLITEHNICA Foundation.
The conference has the aim to cover by its topics the broad domain of advanced materials, with all important aspects: technology of fabrication, property characterization, advanced applications, investigation and mathematical modeling.
The sessions of the conference are also meant to be a forum of scientific debate and discussion.

Introduction The higher education law clearly stipulated: "higher education's mission is fostering the advanced experts with ability of creativity and practice, developing science technology, culture and socialist modernization. " On May 3, 2003, the General secreary Hu Jintao made it clear that" it is necessary for China to educate the high-quality talents with innovative and entrepreneuria spirit" on teacher-student representative forum in peking university.
It needs civil engineering talents to do more.
Current complex engineering practice trends, and world's advanced engineering education "regression works" direction of development are promoting civil education practice.
We propose "cultivate creativity and practice of advanced talents" , the "practice" can not be narrowly understood to exercise in a certain side of skill or technique.

Advanced parts processing technology including identification of new functions has segregated designs, as has the compromise between quality & cost; that is, insuring high quality while minimizing costs.
In response to these needs, laser welding has emerged as critical engineering strategy.
