The principal objective of MM2003 was to create an international forum for the exchange,
dissemination and discussion of the state-of-the-art technologies and recent developments in
macro-, meso-, micro-, nano-mechanics of materials and structures.
While MM2003 focused on the most recent advances in strength, fracture and mechanics of micro- and nano-structured materials, it also served to link the gaps between the conventional macro/mesosystems and the emerging micro/nano-materials technology. 128 papers were presented at MM2003, covering the following areas: Nanotube/Nanofiber; Thin films; Biomaterials & Biomimetics; Polymer/Composites/Interface; Fatigue & Creep; Piezoelectrics & Ferroelectrics; Fracture Mechanics; Fracture Physics; Computational Mechanics; Mechanics of Rock & Concrete; Dynamic Fracture & Damage.
Amongst these topical areas, papers in the fields of composite materials; thin films and coatings; as well as fracture, fatigue and strengths of advanced materials are included here.

Preface
During the last decades, the theory of damage mechanics has made significant progress and established itself
capable of solving a wide range of engineering problems.
The main objective of the conferences series entitled the nth International Conference on Damage Mechanics (ICDMn) is to bring together leading educators, researchers, scientists, engineers and other practitioners discussing and exchanging ideas on recent advances in the field of damage mechanics.
On the foundation of the International Journal of Damage Mechanics (IJDM), this conferences series, held every three years, aims to become the premier international forum on damage mechanics research dissemination.
It provides a forum for scientists and practicing engineers alike to present the latest findings in their research endeavour and at the same time to explore future research directions in the field of damage and failure mechanics.

Introduction Ring rolling is an advanced continuous and local deformation process used to manufacture parts with revolved geometries such as bearings, which has many advantages such as considerable saving in energy and material cost, uniform quality, smooth surface, short production time etc.
