The advantage of Si technology development is to lower the fabrication cost of optoelectronic devices, which are at present based on III–V materials.

Intense visible light photoluminescence emission between 2.0 and 2.76 eV, originating due to band gap engineering of a-Si QD structures in a-SiNx:H matrix, achieved by controlling the Si QD size (i.e. quantum confinement effect) was first demonstrated by Park et al. [70, 71].
