Recently, Dowling et al synthesized a hydrophobically modified chitosan (hm-chitosan) by attaching benzene-n-octadecyl tails to the backbone of chitosan via reaction with 4-octadecylbenzaldehyde.
The carbon and nitrogen content yielded from ortho hydroxytoluene chitosan and those yielded from initial chitosan were detected by Elemental Analyser (Vario EL/micro cube, Elementar Inc., Germany), further the degree of deacetylation (DD) of chitosan and the DS of modified chitosan were calculated according to Eq.1 and Eq.2 respectively [11]: (1) (2) Where, WC, WN represents the percentage of carbon and nitrogen content in the material respectively.
