Identifying and examining some of these inspirations in the context of solar energy conversion using organic materials is one of the main challenges of this century. [3]
In natural photosynthesis, light absorption by antenna complexes is followed by efficient charge separation across a membrane via photosynthetic reaction center proteins (RCs).
The architectures of photosynthetic systems have indeed motivated the design of light-active supramolecular assemblies. [29,30] Using the principles of natural light harvesting may help inspire ways of increasing the capture of solar energy, for example, by materials used for solar fuel production.[28] Bio-inspiration is however a complicated aim: given the multiplicity of functions, natural systems have accumulated complexity, often obscuring the details of the key design principles.
Quantum effects in biology have been posited in many processes ranging from photosynthetic energy transfer, described here, to olfaction, magnetic sensing and even consciousness. [31] Although at the atomic level all the biological materials can be considered ‘quantum’, the extent to which quantum mechanics may really affect the mechanism, dynamics and efficiency of biological processes in physiologically relevant conditions has been seen for many years mostly as a negligible curiosity.
