Abstract.
Due to the fact that friction stir processing (FSP) is an ecological and efficient technique, it is a real progress in the field of surface engineering.
This leads to increased interest in the manufacture of advanced materials for specific applications, materials that can be characterized by fine grain sizes [17].
Conclusions · Friction stir processing is a current process of surface machining, which can make significant contributions in the field of surface engineering.

Preface
This three volume set is a collection of the selected, peer reviewed papers from the 2008
International Conference on Advances in Product Development and Reliability (PDR2008), held in
Chengdu, China, during August 4-6, 2008.
The conference was attended by researchers from 8 countries and served as a forum to promote and exchange the latest experimental findings and theoretical research understanding of mechanical product development and reliability.
We would also like to thank the Organizing Institution, Southwest Jiaotong University, and the Co-Sponsors, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS), and the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society (CMES), who supported the PDR2008 conferecne both financially and in other ways.
