The 200 peer-reviewed articles in this “Nanomaterials by Severe Plastic Deformation” special collection are a convincing demonstration of the relevance of bulk ultrafine grained and nanostructured materials, produced by severe plastic deformation, to a wide range of researchers and engineers., The total number of articles in this edition, larger than that in the 2008 edition, shows that this community is, in fact, growing. The coverage includes all aspects of NanoSPD: Principles of SPD Processing, Microstructural Evolution and Grain Refinement, Mechanical Properties of SPD Materials, Functional and other Properties of SPD Materials, Innovation and Applications.

The aim of this special collection was to provide an opportunity for companies, academic institutions and government research agencies to share, in a collaborative manner, their new research and development work.The main focus was light metals and their applications.
It is to be noted that there was a significant number of papers related to titanium research: due to the extended range of applications of titanium components and the growth in end-user demands for affordable manufacturing. As a result, the collection is truly representative of the three light metals: aluminium, magnesium and titanium; with a similar number of papers concerning each metal.

The Industrial Revolution showed that the development and improvement of new materials and functions could bring about social change, and benefit human society. However, one can be forgiven for feeling that more recent materials research, particularly in the domain of metals, has focused only upon individual elemental characteristics and narrow specialty fields, and that the original vision of materials research has thus been lost.
