Preferred crystal orientations and their statistical distribution – the polycrystalline 'texture' – are of major scientific interest and are of great importance in a wide range of industrial applications. The aim of this book is to monitor the rapid progress made in this field during the last few years.
Texture analysis has expanded beyond its traditional domain of cubic metals and alloys to encompass virtually all crystalline, and even partially crystalline, materials - including natural as well as man-made ones such as geological samples, minerals, ceramics, polymers, composites, low-symmetry materials, thin films and layers. The main objectives are to obtain a better understanding and control of the properties of anisotropic materials (as related to bulk, grain or grain boundary structures), recrystallization and grain growth, deformation textures, and correlations between internal stress, composition and texture.

                    Description: Interest in the phenomenon of superplasticity has been increasing steadily over the past two decades, both with regard to promoting fundamental scientific understanding as well as commercial application. Most of the early studies on superplasticity dealt with microduplex metallic alloys.                     Description: In spite of the very great progress made in ceramic science, and the elegance and excitement of the research which has been performed, the real driving force for developments in ceramics remains their potential applications. The opportunity for dramatic scientific advances was certainly one reason for the "ceramic fever" of a decade ago, but there is also no doubt that the prediction of an annual market for fine ceramics, amounting to 6 billion Yen played a role.

                    Description: Among the various contributions are major papers covering the topics of bulk metallic glasses, GMR in mechanically alloyed materials, nanostructures via melt-spun precursors, mechanical grinding, mechanosynthesis and mechanochemistry. Progress in the area of sintering and compaction techniques is reported. The magnetic, mechanical and electrochemical properties of several nanocrystalline materials are discussed. Significant progress is also reported in the modeling and understanding of basic mechanisms of fabrication processes. Defects and grain boundaries in nanocrystalline materials remain important topics, and are the subject of in-depth consideration.
