Description: The cutting edge of engineering ceramic research is evolving rapidly, leading into new fields far beyond the conventional image of ceramics. Careful tailoring of micro- and nano-structures, in particular, is yielding superior mechanical and chemical properties, such as high hardness, high strength, good heat/corrosion resistance and good tribological properties.
Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS).
This special collection comprises papers from researchers working in the fields of ceramics and composites and thus provides an opportunity for the cross-pollination of knowledge and experience in interdisciplinary fields of materials science and engineering. Intensive discussions were held on the topics of silicon carbide and composites, nitride ceramics, the mechanical properties of ceramics, the sintering of ceramics, ceramics coating and the processing of functional ceramics. This work constitutes an invaluable handbook guide to a rapidly evolving subject.

Description: This special collection presents the fruits of a forum where researchers were able to present the most advanced and novel scientific results and technological developments in the field of eco-materials processing and design. The aim was to overview the current status and to foresee future likely trends in the field of eco-materials processing and design of energy- and environment-related materials. Many fruitful and exciting research achievements are presented here; not only in conventional areas, but also in sustainable energy sources such as solar cells and fuel cells, photochemistry, porous materials, biomass, and bio-inspired technologies for developing microstructures offering superior surface and bulk properties. Altogether, this work presents a unique overview of the topic.

This special-topic volume‚ Advances in Light-Emitting Materials’, makes an important contribution to the field of silicon and III-nitride semiconductors. It begins with a brief history of visible-light emitting diodes. However, silicon is currently expanding from micro-electronics and into photonics. Due to its unsuitable band-gap, it has not previously been the material-of-choice for opto-electronic integration. That is now beginning to change and silicon devices have been developed which have the capability to emit, modulate, guide and detect light and which can be combined with microelectronics to form electronic and photonic integrated circuits.

During the past two decades, China (whose very name of course has long been synonymous with 'ceramic' in the English language) has continued its ancient history of technological excellence in this field by also becoming one of the most active centres of scientific excellence in the field of high- performance ceramics. Building upon the success of the first conference in the series, the Second China International Conference on High-Performance Ceramics (CICC-2) offered an international forum for the presentation, discussion and review of the latest advances in the science and technology of high-performance ceramics.
