The 20th century was a period during which many new sciences and engineering techniques appeared and evolved, and were applied to industrial applications. Towards the end of that century, however, it was recognized that - in many cases - the industrial technologies that underpin current-day society suffered from wider sociogical deficiencies. The usual engineering approaches began to face many difficulties which arose from the high habitual levels of consumption of energy and resources.. Energy sources, and supplies of various resources, have already begun to diminish in the 21st century. These limitations on energy and resources require science and technology to adapt quickly to this new regimen.

Description: The 3rd Asian Conference on the Heat Treatment of Materials (AHTM’05) provided a forum within which engineers, scientists, researchers and production managers could review and discuss recent progress and emerging topics in the fields of Advanced Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering Technology.

General topics, and various R&D efforts related to heat treatment and surface engineering, were also covered at the Conference.

Description: These Proceedings provide a picture of the current knowledge and technology of heat treatment and surface engineering. Most recent developments concerning the thermodynamics and kinetics of the underlying processes are presented here. Special emphasis is placed on process control and computer modelling.

1.the substitution of phenomenological knowledge by fundamental insight on the structure-property relations (e.g. nitriding and nitrocarburazing); 2.the modelling and control of various processes as, in particular, the classical quenching and tempering and the thermochemical processes; 3.the emergence of dedicated surface treatments, as those based on ion beams and the numerous ways for physical vapour deposition; and 4.the rise to maturity of vacuum and plasma technology including the application of (atmosphere) sensors of various kinds.
