There are continuous demands for high performance materials with enhanced properties. In the development of these materials and their processing methods, physical and numerical simulations have important roles to play. By using best current knowledge and modern facilities, these simulation techniques can enable the rapid and economic evaluation and prediction of high temperature processes and applications. The papers deal extensively with physical and numerical simulation, the modeling of processes, as well as recent advances in the processing of various materials, e.g., steels, light metals, composites, etc.

Description: Interest in the phenomenon of superplasticity has been increasing steadily, both from the viewpoint of fundamental scientific understanding as well as of industrial application. The scope of superplasticity has also broadened materials-wise, and now includes, in addition to metals: intermetallics, ceramics, bulk metallic glasses, nanostructured materials and composites. The objective of this special collection was to provide an international forum through which to gather up-to-date knowledge and information on a wide range of topics and to encourage further developments in superplasticity. Over 64 peer-reviewed papers have been selected for publication.
Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS).
The volume is divided into the following chapters: Mechanisms of Superplasticity, Superplastic Materials, Design, Testing and Modelling, Processing, Industrial Applications. Altogether, the contents constitute a timely and invaluable guide to the state-of-the-art of superplasticity.

Description: Physical and numerical simulations make it possible for materials science to go from experience-based to science-based, and from qualitative to quantitative understanding. Physical simulations, which effectively reveal the underlying principles of a material’s structure and property evolution, save significant amounts of time and money. Numerical simulations meanwhile permit descriptions and forms of material processes which are impossible to achieve experimentally. Both types of simulation are naturally gaining acceptance worldwide, and will become a prominent approach used in materials research in the 21st century. Young researchers will therefore benefit greatly from studying this volume.
