The development of new materials with specific properties is discussed such as metal hydride systems. Other active areas of research include in this volume is the surface engineering to locally enhance properties: electro deposition, electrostatic spray assisted vapor deposition (ESAVD) and aerosol assisted chemical vapor deposition. This includes creating metallic glass coatings with high strength and corrosion resistance, cermet coatings with good wear resistance, as well as functional thin films and Nano composite coatings. The work presented here is characterized by a synthesis of experimental research and numerical modeling of the mechanical behavior of materials at different length scales, and the application of models developed to analyze structural parts.

Heat transfer plays major role in many technical devises or in the formation of new materials. Heat transfer is based in three phenomena, namely conduction, convection and radiation. Understanding heat transfer at many levels, from atomic to macro, and its interaction with other physical phenomena has therefore long attracted the attention of many researchers in engineering and materials science and related disciplines. The present topical volume on "Heat Transfer Processes in Engineering Materials" captures a representative cross-section of some of the recent advances in the area of heat transfer. Reflecting the enormous breadth of the area, the range of topics covered is accordingly very large. Topics include the development and modification of the microstructure of materials. Technical applications such as casting problems, coal drying, air cooling systems and pyrolytic boilers. The prediction methods range from analytical to numerical methods such as the finite element method, the finite difference method and molecular dynamics simulation.

This book is a collection of papers concerning the application of advanced materials in machine design. Depending on the scale at which they are analyzed and used, we can talk about composites, nano-composites, nano-materials and intelligent materials, e.g. such as piezoelectric materials, magneto-restrictive materials, functional (Shape Memory Alloys) materials. The efficient and effective use of materials in design applications is directly connected with the good knowledge of the static and fatigue strengths of the material. The detection and control of damages and the study of their effects on the mechanical behavior of materials (especially composite structures) become important practical issues. Materials with multifield coupling properties are an important aspect of modern science and technology with applications in many industrial fields. The book is intended for researchers, engineers, designers and students interested in advanced materials and their use in the machine design and mechanical engineering.
