Description: Coating technology has made great strides during recent years. The properties of surface layers determine the function and quality of entire components. Thus, it is essential to obtain information concerning the development and functionality of the topmost layers. The beneficial effect of coating technology can be observed in many manufacturing fields, where it solves problems such as wear, corrosion, erosion, electrical contact, etc. Even decoration falls under this heading.

Description: Advanced Materials and Processing are important areas of research in Engineering Science and Technology, and require a critical focus on bridging the gap between researchers and engineers. Advanced materials and processing play an increasingly important role in the global economy and in daily life. Researchers and engineers strive to develop new devices and processes, using mathematical and analytical tools to create technologies to handle the rapidly expanding range of materials and manufacturing processes. The Advances in Materials and Processing Technologies conference series creates a stimulating environment for the research collaboration of scholars at the local, national and international levels, contributes to the collective development of a knowledge-based society and economy.

All components and mechanical parts have surfaces which are either exposed to a particular environment or are in contact with other components. Consequent corrosion and/or wear of the surface may then lead to destructive failure. A so-called “bad” surface is a favoured spot for crack initiation, resulting in a decrease in the fatigue, tensile properties and even toughness of materials. Although the development of new materials can improve the surface properties, this can also lead to a change in the properties of the substrate. For example, increasing the carbon content significantly improves the wear resistance of steels, but toughness has to be sacrificed. Increased cost is another major concern. Moreover, for some components, such as gears, a ductile substrate and a hard surface are required. In this case, surface treatment remains the only choice. Surface modification, also termed surface treatment, has thus been recognised as being a major emergent manufacturing technology for improving the surface properties, with minimal alteration of the substrate.

Description: Mechanical spectroscopy is a non-destructive technique that is very well suited for studying the dynamics of singularities such as structural defects in solids. It has been successfully applied in solid state physics and materials science for more than fifty years, and the present textbook aims at summarising the state-of-the-art in this field by presenting recent results obtained in Western European laboratories. The contents are divided into nine chapters. Introduction to mechanical spectroscopy (Ch.1) is based on a complete description of the elastic, viscoelastic, and viscoplastic behaviours of solids. The anelastic response is analysed from three different viewpoints: phenomenology, rheology and thermodynamics.

Description: Precision machining is an essential manufacturing process to achieve high dimensional accuracy and high surface integrity of functional components for various technological applications, such as those in aeronautical, biomedical, mechanical, metrological, mechatronic, nano-technological and microscopy industries. To achieve a satisfactory operation of precision machining, however, one must have a deep understanding of the setting and control of machining conditions, mechanisms of material removal and effectiveness of the cutting tools. As a result, a quality precision machining requires a comprehensive integration of the development of machine tools, the improvement of machining methods and the wise application of materials science and engineering and mechanics of solids.
