Description: Physical and numerical simulations make it possible for materials science to go from experience-based to science-based, and from qualitative to quantitative understanding. Physical simulations, which effectively reveal the underlying principles of a material’s structure and property evolution, save significant amounts of time and money. Numerical simulations meanwhile permit descriptions and forms of material processes which are impossible to achieve experimentally. Both types of simulation are naturally gaining acceptance worldwide, and will become a prominent approach used in materials research in the 21st century. Young researchers will therefore benefit greatly from studying this volume.

The International Conference on Key Engineering Materials and Computer Science (KEMCS 2011), held in Dalian, China, was the first conference to be dedicated to issues related to key engineering materials and computer science. A major goal and feature of KEMCS 2011 was to bring together academics, engineers and industrial researchers in order to exchange and share their experiences and research results touching most aspects of key engineering materials and computer science, and to discuss the practical challenges encountered and the solutions adopted. This work clearly makes a valuable contribution to the field.

Description: Current water-treatment technologies require considerable energy consumption. Thus, closely linked to the problem of water shortage is the impending energy crisis. Therefore, intensive research is being aimed at developing water purification processes that are based upon using renewable energy, such as solar energy, rather than energy generated using fossil fuels. There has been an accumulation of reports on the development of photocatalysts, which enable water purification using solar energy as the only driving force. Such photocatalysts, based upon oxide semiconductors, permit the conversion of solar energy into the chemical energy that is required for the oxidation of toxic organic compounds in water. The most promising photocatalyst is titanium dioxide, TiO2, and its solid solutions. The research on TiO2 photocatalysis is multidisciplinary, and progress in this area requires the application of concepts of catalysis and photocatalysis as well as concepts of solid-state chemistry.

This volume presents selected peer-reviewed papers related to diverse aspects of mechanics and materials. Cases related to the flow of fluids under various conditions, as well as heat transfer, are analyzed. There are also contributions, to the field of the design of mechanisms, which focus on biomechanics and the synthesis of mechanisms. Papers on mechanical vibration are linked to the design of machine tools, rotodynamics and vibrations in microbeams. Also, the evaluation of residual stresses and the estimation of the mechanical properties of vegetal materials are treated. Finally, fractal analysis is applied to solar radiation, and to the materials used in nanomedicine.
