Explosion, shock wave, high-energy reaction and other high-rate phenomena of various materials are the main topic of this collection. The book includes papers related to explosion and shock wave phenomena driven by explosives and other impulsive phenomena including their applications. The use of such intense dynamic loading has been employed for materials processing technology and the field is currently spreading to food processing and others. The volume will bring to readers new idea for the progress in science and technology.

This special issue of the Key Engineering Materials contains the papers presented in the 11th Asia-Pacific Conference on Engineering Plasticity and Its Applications (AEPA2012), held in Singapore, 5-7 December 2012. This conference continues the primary objective of bringing together an international group of scientists, researchers and engineers from academic to industrial institutions, to exchange original ideas, discuss new developments and disseminate the latest research findings in the field of engineering plasticity. Previous symposia have been successfully held in Hong Kong (1992), Beijing (1994), Hiroshima (1996), Seoul (1998), Hong Kong (2000), Sydney (2002), Shanghai (2004), Nagoya (2006), Daejeon (2008) and Wuhan (2010).

Description: This collection of 37 papers describes materials for protecting civilians and soldiers against vehicle collision, blast-damage, fragmentation and unconventional attack. They also treat multi-functional materials for enhancing civilian and soldier performance under extreme conditions. The detailed topics include the atomic-layer deposition of thin inorganic coatings into renewable packaging materials, the development of woven enhanced silk fabric for ballistic protection, novel piezo-electric tactile sensor materials having improved properties, enhancement of the char resistance of expandable graphite-based intrumescent fire-retardant coatings by using multi-wall carbon nano tubes for structural steel, the development of new sol-gel surface-treatment formulations for the bonded repair of aircraft and the laminated microstructure and toughening mechanism of abalone shell.

Description: These papers were presented at the Third International Workshop on the Performance, Protection and Strengthening of Structures under Extreme Loading - Protect2011 - held in Lugano (Switzerland) from August 30th to September 1st, 2011. This event sprang from the cross-border cooperation between two universities, SUPSI and Politecnico di Milano, which have long been engaged in research in these particular areas. Protect2011 is a clear sign that such collaboration offers the opportunity for mutual growth, to the benefit of all.
