The 20th century was a period during which many new sciences and engineering techniques appeared and evolved, and were applied to industrial applications. Towards the end of that century, however, it was recognized that - in many cases - the industrial technologies that underpin current-day society suffered from wider sociogical deficiencies. The usual engineering approaches began to face many difficulties which arose from the high habitual levels of consumption of energy and resources.. Energy sources, and supplies of various resources, have already begun to diminish in the 21st century. These limitations on energy and resources require science and technology to adapt quickly to this new regimen.

Description: It is the aim of the present book to make the reader familiar with the application of a model developed by Andries Miedema which opened completely new perspectives in materials science. For example, a result that was obtained by a one-month run on a Cray 1 supercomputer turned out to be only a few kilo Joules different from the outcome by Miedema’s model, obtained within a few minutes by use of a pocket calculator.

Description: This unusual book analyses the problems left in the field of solid state diffusion. The authors were encouraged to discuss the inconsistencies, the gaps in knowledge, in short, the unsolved problems. This is a much more difficult task than writing the "usual" review and the authors are to be congratulated on their efforts.

Description: Iron and silicon are the main impurites in aluminium: they are always present in alloys made from commercially pure base materials. Both impurities form various intermetallic compounds. These particles can cause basic changes in the macroscopic properties of the aluminium alloys and are thus of special technological interest.
