Materials science is an interdisciplinary field which involves the study of the properties of matter and the exploitation of those properties in various areas of science and engineering. It investigates the relationship between the structure of a material at the atomic or molecular scale and its resultant macroscopic properties. This three-volume set provided an international forum for the publication of theoretical and experimental studies related to the load-bearing capacity of materials, as influenced by their basic properties, processing history, microstructure and operating environment.

Online since: October 2010
Description: This two-volume set contains a collection of 381 peer-reviewed papers. Its aim is to bring together the latest advances in, and applications of, alloy design, process development, component engineering, phase-composition prediction, high-temperature oxidation, wrought alloys, lifetime estimation and materials behavior, cobalt-based alloys, nickel-iron alloys, joining, alternative materials and powder-metallurgy and also to consider the future of superalloys.

This special volume addresses fundamental and practical aspects of high-temperature corrosion and protection. It stresses that devoting attention to an understanding of the corrosion problems encountered by contemporary industry, and providing opportunities for extended interaction, could lead to approaches for improving the performance of materials and protective measures.

Description: The diffusion of atoms is an inherent feature of matter, and the rules which describe the phenomenon are important from both the purely practical and the theoretical perspectives: it is a major rate-controlling process in phase transformations, crystal growth, recrystallization and recovery, creep, sintering, surface treatment and many other situations. Being typically a non-equilibrium macroscopic phenomenon, diffusion can be properly described in terms of the thermodynamics of irreversible processes. At the same time, phenomenological diffusion characteristics represent the mean values of microscopic parameters and reflect the microscopic structure of matter. In the latter case, they contribute to providing a deeper understanding of the physical background to the observed behavior of matter in general.
