Description: This special volume of the journal Defect and Diffusion Forum is entitled: Advances in Mass and Thermal Transport in Engineering Materials IV. It continues the general theme of how mass and heat diffusion in solids and liquids occur and how these phenomena can be controlled. We start from mass and heat migration at the microscale and carry it through to the macroscale.

Description: The atomic and heat transport rates in solids and liquids surely represent the most basic processes in materials science and engineering because these rates affect most fabrication and properties of materials. Research in mass and thermal transport will continue to provide substantial insights into discovering new materials, their properties, and determining how long they would last in service. Research in this area has been especially popular in the area of materials science and engineering. The present special topic volume is entitled: “Mass and Thermal Transport in Engineering Materials II” and follows on from the previous volume in 2020.

Online since: March 2021
Description: This special topic volume captures a snapshot of the last research results of mass and thermal transfer processes in materials and engineering systems currently under extensive investigation worldwide. The breadth of utilization of the mass and thermal transfer processes in engineering is reflected in the correspondingly wide range of topics covered here. Topics range from the research in atomic-scale right up to the macro scale, from basic research on properties right through to actual engineering applications, from hydrogen diffusion in a Pd-Cu alloy membrane to investigating the water-oil separation process.

Description: Research on mass and thermal transport in engineering materials continues to be a rapidly expanding major area of materials science and engineering. It is an exciting area. It is clear that gaining an in-depth understanding of mass and thermal transport underpins the major breakthroughs needed in the development of new materials for new technologies and the improvement of existing materials in service. This topical volume, which is entitled “Recent Progress in Mass Transport in Engineering Materials”, was designed to capture a very wide and significant cross section of contemporary international research on mass and thermal transport. It ranges from basic strategic research through to quite applied areas. This volume spans, for example, the modelling of multiphase fluid flow in porous media for enhanced oil recovery to heat transfer in fixed bed reactors, from the modelling of the drying processes to the growing of indium oxide thin films. We thank the authors for their participation in this volume and the reviewers for their time and efforts.

Description: The general intention of this volume is to give the readers a wide overview of physical problems connected with the processes controlled by atomic migration and of the methods of their modelling. The collection is addressed to researchers and graduate students working in the field of diffusion and diffusion-controlled processes in condensed matter.

Description: This special issue contains selected peer-reviewed papers presented atthe Eighth International Conference on Diffusion in Solids and Liquids(DSL-2012) held at the Hotel Kalyon Istanbul, Turkey during the period 25th-29thJune, 2012.The goal of the conference was to provide a unique opportunity toexchange information, to present the latest results as well as to review therelevant issues oncontemporary diffusion research. Young scientists were especially encouraged to attend the conference and to establish international networks with well-known scientists.
