Nanocomposite materials constitute a rapidly evolving field of science and technology, of which the first applications are already on the market and many more are expected to follow. The admixture of relatively low amounts of nanoparticles (these are, by definition, any morphology having at least one dimension in the nano-range, i.e. particles, fibres, plates) within a matrix of polymer, ceramic or metal has a dramatic increasing effect upon the resultant properties (volume, surface and functional properties). Unusual property combinations can be obtained; resulting in a new class of materials for almost every application.

The recent utilization of nano-sized powders and porous materials has led to the expectation that it will lead to basic breakthrough solutions for prospective nanomaterial products offering high performance and multi-functionalism. For this reason, many industrial countries have financially supported nanostructured materials development and their use in technical innovation.

Composites have long held the center-stage of research and development in the materials community. The concept of combining metals, ceramics and polymers – having various types, shapes and properties - into a single material exhibiting properties that none of its individual components possess, has created endless scope for the imagination of scientists and engineers. It has ignited numerous fields of research and development, and revolutionized many applications. However, in spite of the many advantages of composite materials, there remain troubling underlying problems arising from the complexity of the systems, and these have hindered their full exploitation in everyday life. Such challenges to the composite materials community have been the driving force for holding composite materials conferences such as the celebrated Cross-Strait ones.

The large number, and high quality, of the papers making up this collection reflect the continuing vigor of the powder-metallurgy industry and associated research all over the world. The emergence of such new fields as nano-materials, cellular materials and process modeling by computer simulation is very evident, while traditional fields such as compaction and sintering are also being tackled anew using more sophisticated concepts and tools. Globalization of the economic structure presents challenging opportunities for powder metallurgy, and there is an increasing demand for high-productivity, low-cost, highquality, new products, together with reduced pollution.

Composite materials have been at the center of research and development, in the materials community, for decades. The concept of combining metals, ceramics and polymers of various types, shapes and properties into a single composite material having properties that none of the constituents can themselves exhibit, has provided endless scope for human beings to invent. It has therefore stimulated numerous research and development efforts, and many applications. However, in spite of the advantages of composite materials, many underlying problems arising from the complexity of the systems have greatly hindered them from being the major players that they should be in our daily lives.  Needless to say, the challenges presented to the composite materials community have been the driving force for organizing composite materials conferences, including the Cross-Strait ones.
